2013: Word Two

Cultivate

I’m the most uneasy about this word, but it bubbled up when I was writing about something else the other night.  I’m not entirely sure why.

From my friends at Merriam-Webster:

Definition of CULTIVATE

1
: to prepare or prepare and use for the raising of crops; also :to loosen or break up the soil about (growing plants)
2
a : to foster the growth of <cultivate vegetables>

b : culture 2a

c : to improve by labor, care, or study : refine <cultivate the mind>

3
: furtherencourage <cultivate the arts>
4
: to seek the society of : make friends with

Thinking as I’m writing here, I have images of soil that is tamped down.  No air in there, no room to grow.  Cultivating means preparing that soil to plant something.  Preparing.  Making it usable, fertile, full of potential.

HEY BOOMING VOICE — We don’t have to have ALL the answers on January 1, you jackwagon.

  1. I love the 3 of cups expression. First thing I thought of was calling someone friends to share 3 cups of tea together. Each one a different flavor.
